AHA Scientific Councils Student Scholarships
The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Scientific Councils are offering Student Scholarships in Cerebrovascular Disease and Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. Students in medical schools or in masters or equivalent programs in an accredited school in the United States where research training in cardiovascular disease and stroke are available are eligible to apply. The award is for students to work on a project or projects either in a block of several months or over a longer period. American Society of Hematology Award
The American Society of Hematology HONORS (Hematology Opportunities for the Next Generation of Research Scientists) Award is intended for medical students and residents in North America with an interest in hematology research. The award of a $5,000 stipend is intended to conduct either a short hematology research project for a maximum of three months, or a longer hematology research project between three and 12 months. Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars
This is a one year fellowship program available to students with advanced standing in a US medical, osteopathic, or dental school; or enrolled in a doctoral-level program at a US school of public health, optometry, nursing, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine. Applicants must have strong academic records and must be a US citizen or permanent US resident. PhD candidates must have completed their Master's level coursework. All other professional doctoral degrees must have completed their basic science courses and one year of clinical clerkship prior to the start of the fellowship year. HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program
Cloister Program was established in 1985 to give outstanding students at U.S. medical schools the opportunity to receive research training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Research Scholars spend nine months to a year on the NIH campus, conducting basic, translational or applied biomedical research under the direct mentorship of senior NIH research scientists. Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The Medical Fellows Program supports second and third year U.S. medical and dental students a year of full-time biomedical research training. The fellowship research may be conducted at any academic or nonprofit institution in the United States, except the NIH. Those enrolled in MD/PhD programs are not eligible to apply. An annual stipend of $29,000, an annual fellow's allowance of $5,500, and an annual research allowance of $5,500 is awarded. Application deadline: January 1.
The Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia offers second and third year students with interest in neuronal networking and/or imaging at the cellular and molecular level an intense year-long research training experience, living and working at HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus in DC. Joseph Collins Foundation
The application process is initiated by the student's medical school with a request for the official form. The application is filed by the medical school with a letter from the dean affirming the student's eligibility on the basis of qualifications, merit, and need. The letter must also indicate that the applicant has a desire to specialize in neurology, psychiatry, or to practice general medicine. Applicants must be rising second year students and have academic standing in the upper half of the class and a demonstrated interest in the arts or other cultural pursuits. Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program
This partnership program provides medical students, early in their training, with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. Students participate in an eight-to twelve-week structure research, clinical, and didactic program in geriatrics. NIH Oxford/Cambridge Scholars Program
The National Institutes of Health Oxford/Cambridge Scholars Program is an accelerated, individualized doctoral training program for outstanding science students committed to biomedical research careers. The program is based on the British system. It enables students to undertake a collaborative project in any area of biomedical investigation involving two mentors--one at the NIH intramural campus in Bethesda, Maryland and one at either Oxford or Cambridge University. The projects culminate in the award of a DPhil or PhD in science from either Oxford or Cambridge. Students may also pursue combined MD/PhD training through partnerships the program maintains with a broad range of American medical schools. Pauletta and Denzel Washington Family Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award
Available for undergraduate, graduate and medical students. Purpose is to mentor and encourage young potential scientists and physicians to enter the field of neurological research. Sarnoff Endowment for Biomedical Research
Offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research facility in the United States, other than the medical school in which they are enrolled. Fellows are selected on the basis of a national competition. Seeks individuals with demonstrated intellectual and academic achievement, as well as leadership ability. Applications are encouraged from students without extensive prior research experience. Applicants enrolled in an MD/PhD program will not be eligible for a Sarnoff Fellowship. Applications are encouraged from second and third year medical students. Fourth year medical students are required to submit an official letter from their medical schools granting graduation deferment. There are no citizenship requirements for application, but those who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa.
